Britain's long suffering High Street has been dealt another blow as Poundland is set to close 12 stores this weekend. But there is some good news for budgeting shoppers as the Killingworth Centre branch is hosting a 90% off closing down sale.

The Newcastle upon Tyne outlet had cut prices by 70% but bumped the discount up ahead of its last day of business tomorrow. The bargain store previously confirmed it would be shutting 48 locations this month.

A total of 12 shops are due to close this weekend while a further 11 will pull down the shutters for good the following week. The franchise shut 15 outlets on August 17.

Pepco Group offloaded the discount chain for a mere 1 in June after it suffered a significant downturn in trading over recent years. The bargain store, renowned for selling most products at 1, also hinted at closing dozens more of its UK outlets in the forthcoming years under new ownership.

Currently operating around 800 stores, Poundland anticipates that post-restructuring, it will have between 650 and 700 stores across the UK and Ireland.

Darren MacDonald, Poundland's retail director, expressed his regret, stating: "It is, of course, sincerely regrettable that our recovery plans include any store closures, but sadly that's necessary if we're to achieve our goal of securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores.

"While our anticipated network of around 650-700 stores remains a sizeable one, we entirely understand how disappointing it will be for customers when one nearby, closes.

It's another blow to the UK's high street

"Nevertheless, we look forward to continuing to welcome them to a nearby Poundland."

He added, "It goes without saying that we will work closely with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles. That work is underway."

The budget retailer is currently executing a management-driven recovery strategy backed by an 80m funding deal. The strategy seeks to streamline operations and concentrate efforts during difficult market circumstances.

Poundland chief executive Barry Williams commented: "Although recent trading has been challenging, we have built a turnaround plan with a simplified and more focused Poundland at its heart, as we aim to deliver the amazing value our customers expect."
