Major supermarket to close seven UK stores - see full list

Morrisons has confirmed the locations of seven convenience store closures in Yorkshire, as part of a wider plan to shut around 100 Morrisons Daily branches across the UK

The whereabouts of seven Morrisons convenience store closures amongst roughly 100 set to shut their doors permanently have been revealed. The retail giant, which operates more than 2,200 outlets nationwide, recently announced plans to axe dozens of Morrisons Daily branches.

The supermarket said the shop closures, which were initially acquired as part of a 190million rescue package for McColl's in 2022, were under continuous review but had been losing money for an extended period despite attempts to boost performance. The high street behemoth said their situation had been worsened by "significant cost increases resulting from Government policy choices", including national living wage rises and the increase in employer National Insurance contributions.

Staff impacted by the closures may be offered alternative positions, a Morrisons spokesperson said.

The chain emphasised that the decision affected company-owned outlets, but not its franchised shops - a segment of the business that continues to grow, according to The York Press.

The roughly 100 shop closures have been announced as part of a "wider strategy to improve the overall performance of the retailer's convenience store network", the company said, reports the Express.

Morrisons hasn't released a list of the shops earmarked for closure, as they remain in talks with staff, but has confirmed that various locations across Yorkshire are amongst them.

This includes the following across North Yorkshire and East Riding of Yorkshire:

• Woodthorpe, York Moorcroft Road
• Redcar Queen Street
• Loftus Zetland Road
• Guisborough Esk Close
• Stokesley High Street
• Hull Fairfax Avenue
• South Driffield Middle Street

A HM Treasury spokesperson said: "We have the right economic plan - reforming business rates, with a 4.3bn support package to limit bills rises, capping Corporation Tax at 25%, cutting red tape and taking action on the cost of living to boost the sector."
