The Daily Star: News with a Wink

Bosses at discount retailer Poundland have slammed claims that another branch is set to close. Despite the high street chain being saved from disappearing into the oblivion last month in a 1 sale, the fears of stores closing and the risk of jobs being lost remains.

Currently employing around 16,000 people across 792 stores in the UK, it was confirmed last month that several stores will close in order to secure "the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores.

And while locals in one town were adamant that its local Poundland was closing, it appears that it isn't and that the reality of what has sparked the chaos is a bit . . . well . . . complicated.Shoppers in Hailsham were certain that their local branch was closing down for good, with local media outlets reporting as such.

But now it has been confirmed by Poundland bosses what the future holds for the store based inside the Quintins Centre.

They said, speaking to Hailsham News: We have no current plans to close our Hailsham store and reports that it is, or has, closed are incorrect.

If the landlord has put the store on the market, that's a matter you'll have to take up with them as we're not aware of what their intentions may be.

As eluded to in the statement, it appears as though the site itself is up for sale, not the actual shop currently in business.

However, 68 other stores are closing, as managing director of Poundland Barry Williams said in June that its no secret that we have much work to do to get Poundland back on track.

It's been a rocky few years for the brand(Image: PA)

He added: While Poundland remains a strong brand, serving 20m-plus shoppers each year, our performance for a significant period has fallen short of our high standards and action is needed to enable the business to return to growth.

Its sincerely regrettable that this plan includes the closure of stores and distribution centres, but its necessary if were to achieve our goal of securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores.

It goes without saying that if our plans are approved, we will do all we can to support colleagues who will be directly affected by the changes.

The restructuring plan is the first move by new owners Gordon Brothers, who once owned Laura Ashley.
