When is a Marriott not a Marriott? When it's a Moxy. Although Marriott International launched the Moxy Hotel brand in 2014, it's possible that not many people are aware of it.
That's why I was intrigued to try out the Chester branch, especially when I saw that it was nothing like a traditional version of a Marriott.
With its bright pink lighting, and edgier interior, it was clear from the first moment inside the Moxy Chester - located just a short walk from the famous and historic Roman Walls and city centre - that this was going to be a unique stay.
Gone is the "hello sir, how may we help you" that normally greets you at a Marriot brand, and in comes a "hey, welcome, enjoy your stay". A massively relaxed vibe, where the staff are more like friends than those who are paid to check you in takes over and myself, my wife and my daughter were instantly at ease.
We stayed in a rather large extra sleeper room, that had two queen-sized beds (one was a couch-bed), seperated by a wall with no door, so that we didn't have to go to sleep when our daughter wanted to - a welcome surprise.
The room, as it should be, was spotless, bright, airy, filled with light and (again) not a Marriot. It felt more like student digs with a touch of class, and I welcome that.
The beds were like sleeping on a cloud, and while I perfer something harder, I could see the vast majority of people loving this. And the bathroom was ridiculously huge . . . as were the towels.
We were graciously upgraded without asking to have our stay include bed and breakfast. This would normally cost 13 each per night, and was decent but nothing special. The choice was scrambled eggs, beans, sausages, bacon and hash browns from a buffet, as well as the usuals of various breads, cereals, yoghurts and fruit.
It was nice, but could really do with some more choics on the hot side - I don't think some mushrooms or fried eggs would be too complicated to add to the list.
The staff, again, were brilliant and very helpful when it came to figuring out where everything was, and they were also great with our daughter - they put a smile on her face several times.
Overall, given the location, and experience we've had, we would 100% go back to this hotel and would reccomend it to anyone looking for a short break in one of the UK's most iconic and historic cities.
