Mum fumes as daughter sent home from school for wearing 100 designer shoes

Melissa Pope's 11-year-old daughter was sent home from Grace College in Gateshead, which claimed it was for health and safety reasons as the shoes were 'fashion'

A mum was left absolutely livid after her daughter was sent packing on her first day at high school for donning pricey designer shoes.

Melissa Pope was incensed when her 11-year-old was booted from Grace College, Gateshead, for sporting a pair of swanky Vivienne Westwood pumps emblazoned with the brand's distinctive orb logo last year.

According to a fashion guru speaking to the Daily Star, the shoe's style was named Melissa, and the were up for grabs in upscale shops like Flannels, setting you back 100 at one point. Layla Thomson strutted into school on September 5 only to be shown the door mere hours later. The school cited "health and safety" as the reason for the dismissal.

In a similar vein, another pupil in Year 10 found themselves ejected from the premises, this time for wearing Nike-branded walking boots featuring a prominent Nike swoosh.

Melissa fumed over the incident: "My daughter has had her first day at secondary school and she's been sitting in a room not learning anything at all and not wanting to go back."

She continued, expressing her frustration with the school's rigid dress code: "I asked if I could get her a loafer and they said that still wasn't acceptable, it had to be a brogue type of shoe.

"I just don't see why, I don't understand it, she was wearing them for the last two years of primary school and she didn't have any problems I think it's just a power thing."

Melissa also highlighted the scale of the issue, adding: "There were so many girls sent home today.

"It's a school, it's not a camp, and they're getting treated like they're in the Army and they have got to do this and that and wear this and that."

One disgruntled parent, who chose to remain unnamed, reported that a "large portion" of girls were sent packing for donning Vivienne Westwood-branded shoes.

The mother of the lad turned away for sporting Nike walking boots lashed out at the school, vowing he won't return "until I get paid at the end of the month" due to being strapped for cash and unable to comply with the school's footwear policy.

Grace College, formerly Joseph Swan School, defended its stance, insisting that school shoes must be "plain black and devoid of fashion logos to ensure consistency across the college, ensure safety and protect students from pressure to follow trends".

A spokesperson for the college stated: "Grace College is proud of its uniform for the professional image it portrays, and we expect students to wear it with pride.

"We aim for high standards at all times and wearing the correct uniform in the correct way is a significant and important starting point in setting and maintaining these standards.

"Our uniform policy is designed to be fair, equal and affordable to all students, which is especially important during a cost of living crisis."
