Mystery of missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 could be solved with new experiment

The exact fate of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 remains one of the most perplexing mysteries in aviation history but could experts be about to get to the bottom of it?

It was 10 years ago when Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 disappeared from radar screens and seemingly off the face of the Earth.


But still, the fate of the Boeing 777-200ER carrying 239 passengers and crew from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, remains one of the most perplexing mysteries in aviation history. It sent no emergency distress calls, the aircraft was never heard from again, but startling evidence soon emerged that it had turned off its scheduled flight path and continued flying on for a further seven hours.


Now, one plane enthusiast believes he might be able to get to crack the case with a "new experiment" aimed at finding the ill-fated aircraft.

It comes after extensive search efforts were focused primarily on the southern Indian Ocean, where satellite data suggested the plane may have gone down on March 8, 2014.

In July 2015, a piece of debris identified as a flaperon from MH370 washed up on the island of Runion in the Indian Ocean, confirming that the plane had indeed crashed.

However, the main wreckage and black boxes (flight data and cockpit voice recorders) have never been located.


Now, US-based science journalist and private pilot Jeff Wise is launching a new experiment, which he believes could hold the key to where the plane may have crashed, MailOnline reports.

The Finding MH370 project will try to establish whether the plane did indeed end up in the Southern Indian Ocean by placing a replica of a piece of debris in the likely crash site and remotely monitoring marine growth on that piece.

Speaking to FEMAIL, he said: "It is the most baffling case - most are far more straight forward."

But he believes the outcome of his new experiment could help point the needle in the direction of what happened.

The exact cause of the disappearance remains unknown, though investigators believe that the aircraft's diversion from its planned flight path was intentional, leading to numerous conspiracy theories ranging from mechanical failure to deliberate human intervention.


Speaking about the murder/suicide theory, Wise notes he has an open mind about the fate of the flight but it boils down to two whether the plane crashed into the Southern Indian Ocean or not.

To establish that, all attention has turned to the clues that can be garnered from the flaperon.

As the first piece of the plane to be found, it had spent the least amount of time drifting, which indicates it provides the most useful data point for reverse-drift modelling.

Notably, the piece was covered in gooseneck barnacles (Lepas anatifera) whose shells contained chemical clues that should have provided further evidence about where the plane crashed.

It was hoped that studying this barnacle growth could help find pinpoint the crash site.

The Finding MH370 project has partnered with various experts to carry out the experiment including the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.

Wise hopes that any new information the project yields could re-open the investigation, which drew a blank after a a four-year, $200million international search effort covering more than 120,000sqm.
