Northerners are enjoying a Roaring 20s with levels of spending at bars and restaurants soaring above the south.
Newcastle is leading the charge with sales growth hitting 12.7% over the past year, followed by York (9.2%), Sheffield (7.1%) and Liverpool (6.8%), said the Northern Restaurant & Bar group.
It found all northern cities saw an increase in alcohol trade, with an average rise of 7.2% - compared to around just 6% in London and the south.
Cities such as Manchester, Leeds and Chester have also proven more resilient than the capital in terms of the number of venues with more than a quarter of new openings in the north.

Northern operators are also more confident about their business prospects over the next 12 months, with 59% optimistic - compared to 51% of southern hospitality bosses.
The report shows customers in the north are happier with the overall experience of visiting inns and eateries with a higher percentage of punters very satisfied with the quality of food, service and drinks, in comparison to southern England.
Siobhan Thompson, event manager for the Northern Restaurant & Bar show in Manchester this March, said: The results underscore the strength, resilience and ambition of northern hospitality establishments.
Despite shared challenges in the sector, operators in cities like Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield and Newcastle have demonstrated innovation and optimism in the face of issues such as rising utility prices, food inflation and staffing concerns.
While challenges persist, its heartening to witness the industrys adaptability and positivity.
The surge in new concepts, site launches and the enthusiastic influx of customers through the doors offer a much needed burst of positivity.
CGA by NielsenIQ, which compiled the data, said the figures emphasised the strength of the restaurant, pub and bar scene in the north of England.
