Raging parents slam school for making girls wear 'uncomfortable' trousers

The principal of Dixons Newall Academy in Wythenshawe has written to parents explaining the move, which she says is to 'restore the spirit of unity' and make sure all students feel included

Parents are up in arms over yet another school's move to implement a trousers-only uniform policy, ditching skirts for all students. The controversy has been reignited as Newhouse Academy in Heywood announces its new regulations starting this September, closely followed by Dixons Newall Academy in Wythenshawe making a similar change.

Principal Jo Whitworth communicated the decision in a letter to parents, explaining: "Over the past year, we have observed a growing trend where students are using their uniforms, particularly skirts, as fashion items.

As you know, one of the primary purposes of having a uniform is to promote unity and a sense of belonging among all students, regardless of their individual tastes or socio-economic backgrounds."

Whitworth continued, stressing the importance of uniformity: "Uniforms are intended to reduce distractions and help create an inclusive school environment where students can focus on their education and personal development. When students modify or accessorise their skirts in ways that highlight differences, it undermines the very essence of this policy." reports the Manchester Evening News.

Whitworth concluded with the rationale behind the switch: "To address this issue and restore the spirit of unity, after a period of consultation, we have decided that trousers will be the standard uniform for all students moving forward. This change aims to eliminate the disparities caused by varying skirt styles and to ensure our school uniform once again serves its purpose of fostering equality and a strong sense of community."

She continues to say that the school recognises 'this adjustment may require a period of adaptation', and is 'committed to supporting our students and families during this transition'.

The letter further states: "We believe that this change will ultimately contribute to a more cohesive and supportive school environment."

However, parents have expressed to us their 'deep concern' about the change, which one mother describes as 'sending a troubling message about control and conformity overriding wellbeing'.

"This change has been implemented without proper consultation with parents or students, and its impact is already being felt," the mum voiced.

"Many female students, in particular, are panicking that trousers are uncomfortable, restrictive, and poorly suited to long days in the classroom. Several parents, including myself, have been told by our daughters that they find it difficult to concentrate in lessons due to the physical discomfort. When children are more focused on adjusting their clothing than engaging in their education, something is clearly wrong.

"What's more troubling is the disregard for student choice and bodily autonomy. Taking away the option for girls to wear skirts not only removes an element of personal comfort but also sends a troubling message about control and conformity overriding wellbeing."

She continued: "We teach our children about fairness, respect, and listening to others, yet they are being forced into a uniform policy that ignores their voices entirely. Girls have the right to feel comfortable and confident in what they wear, especially in a learning environment.

"I urge school leadership to reconsider this policy and engage in an open dialogue with families. Uniforms should promote unity, not discomfort."

Another mother voiced her concern that the policy 'robs students of any choice'. "As a parent, I'm deeply concerned and disappointed by the school's decision to make tailored trousers compulsory for all students," she expressed.

"These trousers are often uncomfortable, overly restrictive, and entirely impractical for active teenagers who need to move freely throughout the day. More troubling is the fact that this policy strips students of any freedom of choice, enforcing a rigid standard that prioritises appearance over comfort and wellbeing.

"Children should not have to endure physical discomfort just to comply with an outdated and unnecessarily strict uniform policy. It's time schools start listening to students and parents, and adopt a more flexible, inclusive approach that supports both comfort and self-expression."

The letter from the school includes photos of suggested trousers that will be permitted, stating that wider leg styles will be accepted, but those that 'are tight fitting, a spandex material or flares are not allowed'.
