The UK could be battered by a 480-mile snow bomb early next month, with recent weather maps predicting temperatures could plummet to -9C. The snowy system is anticipated to sweep across the nation between April 3 and April 5.

Weather maps from WXCharts show a band of heavy snow moving southwards late on April 3, intensifying on April 4 and persisting into the wee hours of April 5. The system is propelled by a rush of Arctic air descending from the north, sparking widespread snowfall as it collides with milder Atlantic moisture.

Weather charts depict the snow zone spanning roughly 480 miles from the Scottish Highlands through northern England and the Midlands and down towards parts of southern England. At least 12 major cities could be in the firing line of the wintry onslaught, potentially raising concerns over travel disruption, school closures and treacherous driving conditions.

Forecast charts suggest the Arctic air will start moving south across Scotland late on April 3. The chillier air mass is then expected to extend further into northern England and the Midlands during April 4.

Simultaneously, high pressure is predicted to build to the west of the UK, aiding in driving icy northerly winds down the country.

By the early hours of April 5, the coldest conditions could become firmly entrenched, resulting in a sharp overnight freeze, reports the Express.

Snow accumulations could reach approximately 5-10cm across parts of eastern Scotland and elevated terrain, whilst more sporadic build-ups are anticipated further south.

Weather predictions caution that once clouds disperse, a severe frost is set to follow, with temperatures potentially plummeting to -9C in countryside regions of Scotland and northern England by the morning of April 5.

The chilly period is anticipated to bring vigorous northerly winds, creating conditions that feel considerably more bitter than actual readings indicate.

Daytime temperatures across northern regions may battle to climb above -2C or -3C at the height of the cold outbreak.

Additional forecasts suggest temporary snow coverage might stretch as far south as portions of southern England close to the English Channel.

Weather patterns could also stay turbulent well into April's second week, with additional wintry downpours likely before temperatures slowly bounce back.

Households might need to brace for the abrupt cold snap by inspecting heating arrangements, protecting vulnerable pipework and allowing additional travel time as Britain prepares for a delayed seasonal winter blast.
