Wacky diets of sports stars who put sumos to shame with plates of cow hearts and chicken feet

Sumo wrestlers have descended on the UK for a tournament and Londons restaurant owners are quaking in their boots. But compared to some sports stars, their diets look pretty normal

Sumo wrestlers need to enjoy their grub

Sumo wrestlers have been gobbling huge amounts of grub while in London, as the Daily Star revealed this week.


The 25-stone stars of the traditional Japanese sport have been competing in the Grand Sumo Tournament at the Royal Albert Hall.


But the weighty grapplers are chowing down on so many noodles to fuel up for their bouts that wholesalers have run out. Here we look at other gob-smacking diets from sport


Top banger : Baseball legend Babe Ruth had a huge appetite. The American superstar, known for hitting home runs, also liked to slug down hot dogs while he was playing.

In 1925 he ate 12 in one sitting in between doubleheader games. He washed it all down with eight bottles of soda.

Moo-ve it : Man City striker Erling Haaland munches 6,000 calories a day to prepare for games. The 6ft 5in Norwegian loves tucking into kebab pizza, while also enjoying eating cows heart and liver. One teammate says he eats like a bear.

Chicken winger : Former England footballer Andros Towsend, who now plays for Thai club Kanchanaburi Power, has tried to look after his body by eating some unusual fare. He says: One of the best natural sources of collagen is chicken feetIts very nice.

Wee advantage : Brazilian mixed martial arts star and former UFC champ Lyoto Machida swigs his own urine, believing it strengthens his immune system.


He says he drinks it every morning like a natural medicine and adds sometimes its sweet, sometimes its salty.

Raw power : Kiwi boxer Joseph Parker likes eating his fish while its still alive! The ex-WBO champ says: I bit a fish's head off and killed it. He says it tasted f****** good.

The beefcake also enjoys devouring plates of scorpions, tarantulas and centipedes.

Jammy bodger : While playing at Chelsea, French footballer Kurt Zouma was snapped enjoying a lunch that involved eating a jam sandwich and dunking it into his hot chocolate.

Unimpressed fellow player Tammy Abraham posted the footage with three face palm emojis.


Shot of success : Leicester City famously won the 2016 Premiership title with the help of striker Jamie Vardy.

The goal machine geared up for every game that season by drinking port the evening beforehand from a Lucozade bottle. He said: It tastes like Ribena to me.

Crunching stat: Last year it was revealed that Welsh darts star Kevin Mills eats up to 46 packets of crisps a day! He even enjoyed the potato snacks at his wedding.


While everyone else was eating hog roast, the player was getting his laughing gear round a crisp sandwich.

Set meal : Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic developed a bizarre habit of eating the grass while playing at the Wimbledon tennis championships.

He says the green blades taste very, very good. But the ace only trusts the turf at SW19, adding: I only eat Wimbledon grass.

Tough cookie : Olympic shot putter Geoff Capes once the World Strongest Man had a diet that might put a sumo wrestler to shame.

The Brits typical breakfast was: Three pints of milk, cereal, half a loaf of bread, six eggs, half a pound of bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes and a can of beans.
