Zaras wide leg trousers might be the it look right now - but shoppers claim the viral bottoms have been sending people flying into A&E.
The high street chains Flowing Wide Leg Trousers have reportedly sparked a global online storm after a wave of tripping accidents. On TikTok and Instagram they have been dubbed lethal trousers, deadly trousers and even Zara death pants, with hashtags like #ZaraDeathTrousers and #DeadlyZaraPants racking up views.
The 26-trousers are made from polyester with a flowy satin feel, sit high waisted, and come with an elastic waistband and front pockets in several colours. Many assumed the trousers were simply too long.
But shoppers and fashion insiders claim the real danger is the width of the lightweight fabric. As wearers walk, the billowy, floor skimming material can wrap around the opposite foot, effectively trapping it.
The risk gets worse with sandals, open toe shoes or trainers, as the fabric can slide underneath footwear and suddenly lock your feet together mid step, CBC reported. Fashion design directors have also warned the excess material can be especially risky on stairs, escalators and uneven pavements.
Some people who have had the trousers professionally hemmed claim they still stumble because the width is so dramatic, Firstpost reported. What started as jokes has turned into clips showing real injuries, with some videos reportedly filmed from hospital waiting rooms as shaken shoppers explain what happened.
The list of alleged injuries include deep facial cuts, split lips, lost toenails, grazed knees, bruised ankles and sprains.
Others claim they have suffered serious fractures, including broken wrists, broken elbows and fractured knees. A Facebook user commented: "I thought this was only me.
"I went a**e over t*t on holiday. Trifecta of hem, toes and sandal edge.
"Landed on my face." A person wrote: "I thought it was only me!
"Told my daughter and shes done it too! No more wide leg pants with Docs or Birks!"
Another wrote: "They trip you up. Happened to me they were not from Zara but they were very similar (not as wide tho) i stopped wearing mine when I almost tripped over in my kitchen while I had concrete floor (I was putting new lino down) it was really scary."
Someone else penned on YouTube: "LOL I have these pants!! I trip all the time in them only wear them at home but the stairs are life or death."
