Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are battling a huge blaze in southeast London which has sent thick clouds of smoke billowing over the capital this evening (August 18).

Dramatic footage shared across social media shows a large plume of smoke rising above Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, with witnesses reporting that the fire could be seen from miles away. Some footage suggests that the fire could be at Deptford Recycling Centre, where there was a blaze on June 8 which caused chaos with trains cancelled.

The London Fire Brigade has since confirmed that the fire broke out on Landman Way, Deptford, and that rail services have been disrupted as a result.

A statement read: "Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are responding to a fire on Landman Way, Deptford. The fire involves around 50 tonnes of household waste stored at a waste facility.

"Rail services into London Bridge are impacted as crews work to bring the fire under control. A large amount of smoke is being produced by the incident. Local residents should keep doors and windows closed where possible.

"The Brigade was first called about the incident at 19:59pm, and crews from East Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Deptford and surrounding fire stations have been sent to the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known."

The fire service later added: "The fire involves around 50 tonnes of household waste stored at a waste facility. This will be a protracted incident, with firefighting operations expected to be taking place through the night."

National Rail has warned the fire is causing disruption to services that call at London Bridge, with trains potentially cancelled, delayed or revised as emergency crews respond.
