Brits are being told to rummage through their loose change for a particular rare coin that could net them hundreds of pounds. An exclusive 50p piece from 2009 might bring in around 300, according to one specialist.


Recently, coin hunters have been on the look out for a one pound with special error that makes it worth 1k. Taking to TikTok, coin enthusiast the Coin Collector UK disclosed that a distinctive design created for the 2012 London Olympics is massively in demand amongst collectors.


But sellers need to ensure they've got the 2009 version rather than the 2011 one, as the more recent edition is only valued at roughly 2. "This Olympic 50p coin can be worth 300" he informed his audience.

"There are two different versions of this coin and one is worth much more than the other. If you find one with the date 2009 on the back of the coin, then this is the expensive version worth around 300 pounds."

The coin showcases a high jumper and was designed by eight year old Florence Jackson from Bristol through a Blue Peter contest, reports the Mirror.

The Coin Collector went on: "Less than 20,000 of these were made as part of a Blue Peter competition and they were put into special cards like this."

"Although it was not minted for circulation there is a very small chance you may find one in your change if someone has broken it out of the pack and spent it."

He explained: "The regular 2011 one that's in this video, unfortunately doesn't go for this large sum with over two million of these made - it is still worth keeping and worth about two pounds.

"But remember, it's the year 2009 that you want to be checking for, which is worth the big money. Always keep any Olympics if you find them."
