A "loud boom" sparked panic as people thought they heard an explosion as an object flew through the sky today (March 17).

The noise was heard in Cleveland and is was likely "a result of a meteor", the National Weather Service claim, as footage has been shared online.

Most people heard the "boom" were based in Ohio but it appears other states also witnessed or heard the object.

The National Weather Service Pittsburgh shared footage taken by an employee of the object on social media. Speaking on X, they said: "One of our employees, Jared Rackley, caught this morning's meteor on camera from the Pittsburgh area."

CBS affiliate WOIO claimed the sound was even heard in parts of New York and believes the boom was the meteor breaking the sound barrier.

It is currently unconfirmed whether the meteor entered earth's atmosphere.

One witness writing on social media said: "Meteor went over Ohio here and it was a big sonic boom it was heard for Miles from Pennsylvania to almost Indiana and it was captured on video."

Another said: "An hour ago my whole entire house shook and there was the worlds loudest bang and I thought a house exploded but didn't see anything outside. A literal meteor hit."
