Need to know: Two New York cops hospitalised after snowball fight turns violent in Washington Square Park

  • Two New York police officers were hospitalised after being pelted with ice during an organised snowball fight at Washington Square Park.
  • The officers responded to reports of people on a roof at the Manhattan beauty spot on Monday afternoon but were bombarded with snow and ice by a crowd. Video footage shows cops being struck while some shouted abuse as they tried to push through the crowd.
  • Police unions branded the incident "an assault by adults throwing chunks of ice and rocks" rather than harmless fun. Patrick Hendry, president of the Police Benevolent Association, said: "This was not just a 'snowball fight.' This was an assault - by adults throwing chunks of ice and rocks - that landed two police officers in the hospital."
  • New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani initially downplayed the episode, saying it "looked like kids at a snowball fight". However, he later called for respect towards city workers after facing criticism.
  • NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the behaviour as "disgraceful" and "criminal", with detectives now investigating the matter. Police have released images of four men they want to speak to in connection with the incident.
  • The incident occurred during a historic blizzard that dumped over 19 inches of snow on New York City.
