Famous UK buildings like Big Ben and Tower Bridge rank among the most destroyed landmarks in movies, a new study shows.

The Elizabeth Tower, better known as Big Ben, has been obliterated nine times in blockbusters such as Mars Attacks! and London Has Fallen. It is followed by the London Eye, demolished on seven separate occasions across films including Independence Day and Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer.

While Tower Bridge has tumbled into the Thames six times in movie history, falling in films such as Independence Day: Resurgence and Spider-Man: Far From Home. But American landmarks bear the brunt in action and disaster movies with New Yorks Statue of Liberty annihilated 19 times.

Its unlucky 13 for San Franciscos Golden Gate Bridge, the Big Apples Times Square has been smashed nine times, while the Hollywood sign has been bashed up on half a dozen occasions.

While the Eiffel Tower in Paris has been twisted or torn down seven times.

Martin Burke, chief underwriting officer at insurer MS Amlin, which conducted the study, said: Hollywood has been blowing up the worlds most cherished landmarks for decades, undoubtedly amassing billions, if not trillions, of dollars in fictional damages.

It comes after Netflix has agreed a 54 billion takeover of Warner Bros Discovery in one of the biggest deals in Hollywood history. The streaming giant says the deal will deliver up to 2 billion in savings.

The US firm won a drawn-out bidding battle to acquire the studio groups film and television operations. The deal includes the HBO Max streaming service. It will also tie up Warner Bros major franchises such as Harry Potter and Game Of Thrones and Netflix hit Stranger Things.

The takeover, which will reshape the global streaming market, is pending approval from competition regulators in multiple countries. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said: We can give audiences more of what they love and define the next century of storytelling.

But questions remain over the future of HBO Max as a standalone service.
