Bonnie Tyler stars in new educational video, using Jaffa Cakes - to explain lunar eclipses

The 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' hitmaker recreated the cake brand's iconic 'Full moon, half moon, total eclipse' advert, from 1999

Watch as "Total Eclipse of the Heart" singer, Bonnie Tyler, stars in a new educational video, using Jaffa Cakes to explain how lunar eclipses work.

The 72-year-old Welsh hitmaker, who celebrated 40 years of her iconic number one track this year, has created her own version of the well-known "Full moon, half moon, total eclipse" Jaffa Cake advert, which first aired in 1999.

It comes as a partial lunar eclipse is due to be visible across the UK this Saturday (October 28) with just 7% of Brits aware of the upcoming celestial phenomenon.

And ahead of the event, Jaffa Cakes commissioned a survey of 2,000 adults, to find out just how much Brits know about astronomy which revealed that just 12% consider their knowledge on the subject to be "good".

While two-thirds claim to be fascinated by space science, only half (51%) know what a lunar eclipse is, and just 12% know the moon is egg-shaped with 84% wrongly believing it is round.

In fact, more than six in ten (62%) did not know there are eight planets in the solar system, with 58% unaware that Mercury is the smallest planet.

A third of those polled have no idea what a black hole is, and 18% are unaware how the moon impacts tides. And 12% believe the moon emits light, when in fact it reflects light from the sun.

Bonnie Tyler said: "Given my connection to eclipse-related matters, I was very happy to collaborate with Jaffa Cakes to educate Britain about the science behind this magnificent lunar phenomenon.

"I hope that after watching this video, people throughout the UK will gain a deeper understanding of the night sky."

The study also found that three in ten (31%) think the earth orbits the sun 365 times a year when in fact, its only once. And 48% didn't even realise the Earth itself moves around the sun, while half were unaware that the moon orbits the Earth.

However, 45% remember learning about astronomy at school and, after learning about this weekend's partial lunar eclipse, four in ten said they would like to watch it.

The research, carried out via OnePoll, found that 46% would even like to go up to space and see it for themselves.

To pay homage to the iconic song, the brand has also partnered with superstar DJ, Majestic, to remix Total Eclipse of the Heart, with a twist including a sample of Bonnie reciting the iconic Jaffa Cakes catchphrase of "Full Moon, Half Moon, Total Eclipse".
