A married couple desperate for a baby were told they've been having sex incorrectly for four years - shedding light on their inability to conceive.

The couple, who remain anonymous but were aged 26 and 24, sought professional advice after failing to fall pregnant, despite frequent intercourse.

However, alarm bells rang when doctors discovered the wife was still a virgin. She subsequently admitted sex was "usually painful" for her each time.

Obstetrician Liu Hongmei said: "The couple were very young, the man 26 and the woman 24. They were very healthy, but, despite being married for four years, couldn't conceive.

"Their family was giving them a lot of stress because of it," she added.

During the consultation, while probing the wife's medical history, Liu was informed that the couple had regular sexual relations.

The wife also disclosed that the act was "unusually painful" for her every time, yet she bore it in the hope of becoming pregnant.

These signs led Doctor Liu to suspect the woman might have a gynaecological condition.

However, Liu confessed she was "shocked" when an examination confirmed the wife was still a virgin.

As reported by China's Guiyang Evening Post, Liu's "experience" led her to examine the woman's anus.

It was then that the doctor reportedly discovered that the couple had been mistakenly engaging in anal intercourse for four years, explaining their inability to conceive.

Doctor Liu is said to have provided each member of the couple, from Bijie city in China's south-western Guizhou province, with a sex-education handbook.

She also gave them some "guidelines" before they were discharged.

The advice appeared to work wonders, as news of the wife's pregnancy arrived just a few months later.

They reportedly informed the now retired doctor that they were finally expecting - by delivering 100 eggs and a live hen as gifts to her former hospital.

Liu stated: "Four years of marriage and neither the husband nor wife knew how to get pregnant. Couples so lacking in general knowledge are very rare.

"But it is not uncommon for people to lack or have misconceptions regarding sexual knowledge."
