Urban explorers often stumble upon eerie and unexpected sights, but two pals who wish to remain anonymous discovered something truly "unbelievable" in the Derbyshire Dales' Middleton mine - an abandoned film set.

The set, complete with a vintage blue and white American bus, a stage, car lift, caravan and lighting plan, is believed to have been used for the 2025 Marvel blockbuster The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning.

The pair revealed that "two people who helped support the staff and actors" on the films had shared the details with them.

One of the explorers said: "I usually like to find interesting artefacts, but I've not found a film set before.

"We were walking along with our torches and we suddenly found this area all built up and an old American bus just sitting there.

"The lighting rigs were there on scaffolding and a map of where they wanted all the lights to be.

"It's very bizarre to see an elevator car just sitting in the middle of a roadway, and a stage in front of the bus.", reports the Mirror.

"There was all sorts of machinery they had used to set up, and a cabin with a microwave and kettle.

"There were all sorts of pipes they'd used to keep the air clean there's a risk of radon gas down there.

"It was quite something to see the film set it wasn't what we had expected at all.

"I believe they filmed for Lord of The Rings in there and also Mission Impossible."

The Fantastic Four: First Steps hit cinemas in 2025 with Pedro Pascal taking on the leading role of Mister Fantastic. The movie pulled in $521.9 million at the box office and earned positive reviews from audiences.

Set during the swinging sixties, the story centres on Mister Fantastic and his superhero family as they must "balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond" whilst working to "defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus, and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer", as described by Rotten Tomatoes.

The stellar cast also features Vanessa Kirby as the Invisible Woman, Mister Fantastic's heroic spouse, alongside Joseph Quinn portraying the Human Torch and Ebon Moss-Bachrach bringing The Thing to life.

This marked Marvel's third attempt at bringing the superhero family to cinema screens, following previous outings in 2005 and 2007, plus a 2015 reboot effort.

Disney has remained tight-lipped about the speculation so far.
