The Daily Star: News with a Wink

Woman fined 100 for overdue MOT infuriates people with 4-word excuse

Every driver knows that they're meant to get an MOT done for their car each year, and failure to do so could lead to serious trouble. Every car in the UK more than three years old is required by law to have an MOT every year. The test checks critical components such as brakes, lights, tyres, and seatbelts, to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy and legally compliant.

Driving without an MOT can lead to a 1,000 fine, invalidated insurance, and potential vehicle seizure. But when one woman claimed she was pulled over by the police, she revealed she didn't have a clue what an MOT was.

Chloe Lowe shared that she'd "just been pulled by undercover police," and the officer told her a search of her numberplate had shown her "MOT has been due for two months".

Chloe said that she thought she paid for it every month, possibly mistaking it for insurance, but had been told this was wrong. She said: "What the f*** is MOT? What the? I thought it came out of my bank every month?"

Her excuse for her ignorance towards the matter stressed many out, however, as she said: "I'm just a girl."

She fumed that she now had a 100 fine when she didn't "have 100 spare," because she'd just been to Primark and spent 60 on pyjamas and had her nails done, so she was left wondering what to do. "I've just gone and spent it," Chloe raged.

In the comments, someone pointed out that she "got lucky" to only receive a 100 fine, adding you can "have your car seized for that".

Another fumed: "Nobody should be allowed to get their license and own a car without knowing what an MOT is. The test that ensures your car is literally safe on the roads. The fine should be bigger and points in my opinion."

Others wondered how Chloe passed her theory test in the first place, as MOT-related questions are part of the certification. This will test people's knowledge of how often an MOT lasts - one year - and whether it's legal or not to drive without one - it isn't.

"Come on, girl, you're letting the side down," one woman fumed, with others saying she was "setting women back" by using this as an excuse.

She did receive a kind and helpful comment from one user, however, as they shared: "Find a garage that sends you a reminder a couple of weeks before. Hope this helps, unlike most of the unhelpful comments."

Why is it important to ensure your car has an MOT before driving?

It's a legal requirement, and can invalidate your insurance if you're caught without an MOT, meaning you would be personally liable for any damages in the event of an accident.

You cannot legally renew your vehicle tax without a valid MOT certificate.

Qualified technicians thoroughly test essential components like brakes, steering, suspension, seatbelts, and tyres, to prevent dangerous, avoidable breakdowns and collisions, so it's completely for your and other road safety users' safety.
