Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader 'El Mencho' killed in major army operation

Infamous Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader 'El Mencho' has been killed in major operation carried out by the army in municipality of Talpa de Allende in Mexico

The leader of Mexico's notorious Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), 'El Mencho', has been killed in an operation carried out by the army, according to publications in the country.

Real name, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, El Mencho was known as the top boss of the CJNG as federal forces confirmed his death today (February 22).

Confirmation of his death comes after sources to Mexican publication MILENIO cited top officials claiming a death in Jalisco following an army operation.

Locals would have been made aware of a huge operation after several hours of roadblocks with burning vehicles in Jalisco and other nearby states.

According to The Washington Post, this tactic is commonly used by the cartels as they look to prevent military carrying out operations against them.

The US State Department had previously offered a reward of up to $15million for information on El Mencho that would lead to his arrest.

Trump's administration even designated the CJNG as a foreign terrorist organization earlier this year as part of the US President's cartel crackdown.

The Mexican government is reportedly remaining vigilant in the area with increased presence of security officials in case of retaliation or violence from the cartel.

The CJNG have seen a rapid expansion across Mexico in recent years, led by quiet kingpin El Mencho.

Its members routinely carry out brutal acts of violence to intimidate their rivals and has been even known to have downed an army helicopter with a rocket-propelled grenade.

Claims were made they would make new recruits to feast on human flesh and carry out beheadings in its infamous terror schools.
