Rare coins could potentially be worth a small fortune for a variety of reasons.

It might be due to a minting error or the fact that only a few made it into circulation. Either way, it's always a good idea to keep an eye on your collection.

It's worth noting the Kew Gardens 50p coin also comes in a gold proof condition, which is incredibly rare. If you happen to have one of these, it's worth 5,000-6,000.

Recently, one sold for a staggering 7,000, according to TikTok user @CoinCollectingWizard, who boasts 165,400 followers.

In a recent video, he revealed: "Have you seen this? This beauty of a coin sold for 7,000. The ultra-rare version of the Kew Gardens 50p was estimated to fetch between 5,000 and 6,000.

"The winning bidder bagged themselves this graded PF70 version, which is the highest grade a coin can achieve. There were just 629 gold proof versions of the Kew Gardens 50p coin purchased by the public in 2009.

"The coin features a design by Christopher Le Brun on the obverse, celebrating the Royal Botanical Gardens. This coin was first released in 2009 to celebrate 250 years of the iconic west London landmark.

"Since then, it has become the 'holy grail' of UK coin hunting."

Sharing the specifics of the coin, he claimed a regular circulating version of the silver coin could fetch 150 and potentially more if it's uncirculated.

The video has since garnered 150 likes and several comments. One user queried: "I have," while another asked: "Have you got one?" The TikTok user responded with a regretful: "Sadly not."
