Right now we're slap bang in the middle of spider mating season, which might explain why you're seeing more eight-legged guests than usual. Every year, from late August through to early October when it hits its peak, male spiders venture out on the prowl for females to mate with.
As temperatures plummet, they abandon their webs in search of warmer indoor spots, creating a particularly tough time for anyone suffering from arachnophobia. Fortunately, there are measures you can take to stop them from invading your home. For those keen to keep these unwelcome creatures at bay this autumn, three budget-friendly natural deterrents have been suggested.
TR Cleaning Services, based in Weston-super-Mare, shared these tips on TikTok, leaving viewers eager to test them out.
The cleaning experts unveiled three natural repellents, stating: "First, clean your windows. Then use white vinegar and water mixed in a spray bottle."
Mixing equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spritzing it around entry points, cracks and corners can help keep spiders away.
White vinegar contains acetic acid, which spiders absolutely despise.
Another approach, which also leaves your home smelling delightful, involves using a mixture of peppermint oil and water in a spray bottle instead.
Once more, this technique works in principle because spiders detest both the scent and flavour through their legs. However, pet owners should exercise caution with this approach, as numerous essential oils including peppermint, eucalyptus and tea tree oil can pose risks to animals.
An alternative technique they suggested involves rubbing lemon peel around window frames where eight-legged intruders might try to gain access.
These arachnids absolutely loathe powerful citrus fragrances from oranges, lemons and limes, which overwhelm and irritate their sensitive systems.
When questioned about the frequency of this treatment, a cleaning specialist revealed: "I do this once a week just to make sure. Only get the odd spider here and there, before I would get loads, so I would say they work for me personally."
Another person who had trialled these techniques confirmed: "Lemon works on mine."
Additional tactics worth considering for blocking spiders from your dwelling involve plugging potential access routes by ensuring no fissures, openings or cavities exist near doorframes, windows or walls.
Dimming exterior illumination may also prove beneficial, since spiders hunt insects that gravitate towards bright lights.
Maintaining a spotless household through frequent hoovering, prompt cobweb removal, and organising storage spaces could make a difference too.
Given that spiders feed on bugs, eliminating the attractions that tempt these creatures means clearing away food particles and storing provisions in sealed containers.
Regular bin emptying and keeping lids firmly in place are equally important.
