Countless fans cherish Alan Rickman's iconic portrayal of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter franchise, where his remarkable performance continues to captivate audiences - though the beloved actor harboured his own reservations about the entire experience.

Following the 69 year old's death in 2016, his widow Rima Horton assisted in publishing his intimate journals, which became the book Madly, Deeply: The Alan Rickman Diaries.

These candid entries reveal the star's raw thoughts about working on the legendary film series, which might shock devoted admirers.

Prior to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone hitting cinemas, Rickman confided his concerns, writing that he felt "a bit nothing about HP, which really disturbs me," - sentiments that appeared to persist throughout his involvement.

His enthusiasm for the finished product seemed limited, particularly after viewing the inaugural film, where he expressed pointed criticism of the soundtrack.

The actor penned that the movie "acquires a scale and depth that matches the hideous score by John Williams". Despite his professional reservations, Rickman appeared to thoroughly enjoy the celebrations after at the Savoy, Hotel, based on his diary reflections.

By the time the second instalment arrived in 2002, his patience was clearly wearing thin as he noted: "reiterating no more HP. They don't want to hear it," though he eventually committed to "see it through".

However, it wasn't entirely negative - Rickman actually expressed considerable praise for The Prisoner of Azkaban.

He revealed in his personal diaries that the award-winning filmmaker had done "an extraordinary job", and he believed the picture was far more "grown up".

He continued to heap praise upon it, penning that it was "so full of daring that it made me smile and smile," before adding that "every frame of it is the work of an artist and storyteller."

During the project's initial stages, JK Rowling shared a crucial detail about his character's destiny before it had been penned, though not without nerves.

The performer recalled a pivotal moment when the author assisted him by revealing, "Snape loved Lily," which, in his own words, provided him with a "cliff edge to hang on".

His disapproval didn't end there; indeed, he noted after watching The Half-Blood Prince that he wished to "bang the three Davids' heads against the nearest wall", referring to the Harry Potter producers David Heyman, David Barron and David Yates.

Whilst he commended the special effects as "dazzling" and the character progression, he was left wondering, "Where is the story?".

When the beloved film franchise reached its conclusion and Professor Snape's memorable demise arrived, he wasn't particularly satisfied with the execution. His journal entries reveal that Snape's on-screen death turned out to be "all a bit epic and Japanese." Furthermore, he described it as "unsettling to watch".

Despite his disappointment, he acknowledged that viewers were "very happy". After the franchise concluded, Alan Rickman embarked on a variety of roles beyond the realm of wizardry.

His final film role was lending his voice to the Caterpillar in Alice Through The Looking Glass, which debuted in 2016, following his passing at the beginning of that year.
