Cat lover Ricky Gervais is switching to animation for his latest Netflix show called Alley Cats.

The adult carton comedy series follows the trials and tribulations of a group of feral British cats who seek companionship while ruminating about the struggles of everyday life. Created in 2D animation, it features the voices of Gervais and his After Life co-star Tom Basden, as well as Diane Morgan plus EastEnders legend Natalie Cassidy.

Ricky describes it as a six-part "slacker sitcom" featuring a "fat, lazy, rude, opinionated creature with fangs" who is not as smart or brave as he thinks, joking that the role is typecasting.

Alley Cats premieres at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June and hits the streaming giant on August 7.

Ricky Gervais will also attend Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Thursday June 25 for a discussion of the upcoming series, which features his signature style of heart and social commentary that audiences have come to expect. As part of the discussion, Netflix will also give a world exclusive sneak peek of the first two episodes, ahead of the series premiere.

From the funny to the absurd, the series - which features six 15 minutes episodes - is packed with Gervais signature style of heart and social commentary that audiences have come to expect.

Ricky is a massive cat lover and previously said about moggies: "I love cats. I love kittens. I love old cats. And everything in between.. I love boss-eyed cats.

"People often tell me that I spoil my cat, and I agree. ...If the cat sits on our lap, we consider it a privilege and will not move".

The comedian who supports various animal charities added "Cats possess a seemingly unstressed demeanour, which can paradoxically induce stress in someone observing them due to the perceived unfairness of their lack of worries. Black cats are the last to be adopted & many are even euthanised due to idiotic superstition. Black cats are beautiful"

Gervais associates with their lack of guilt: "No conscience, no guilt. You'll never see a cat feeling guilty".

However, Gervais does respect the power of cat adding: "If a cat was big enough, it would kill you and eat you, right?"

Gervais has a long history with Netflix with hits shows like After Life, Derek and numerous stand-up specials.
