Tamzin Outhwaite has brought out her inner 70s diva as part of a new role. The star is getting her teeth back into acting as she takes on a legendary leading role in one of the UK's most beloved comedies.
Former EastEnders star Tamzin, 55, is starring as the ferocious Beverly in the hit play Abigail's Party. The show is currently running at the Harold Printer Theatre in the London suburb of Stratford.
Tamzin looked glamorous as she donned a flowing yellow sparkly gown for the role, shimmering with its various rhinestones as it hit the light. She also brought the glamour as she wore a string of jewellery, including necklaces, bangles and watches.
The show is a full reminiscence of the 1970s, with the set looking exactly like a typical British house. Complete with floral wallpaper, the actors wore oversized collar shirts, long flowy dresses and high platform heels reflecting the style of the time.
Abigail's Party is set in Essex in 1977, at a time of social unrest and low wages. But determined to have some fun, Beverly played by Tamzin puts on a lavish get-together to try and lift everyone's spirits.
With the drinks flowing and plenty of food on offer, Beverly and husband Laurence played by Kevin Bishop welcome new neighbours Angela and Tony. Played by former Hollyoaks star Omar Malik, Tony makes himself at home quite quickly and party gets going.
Next-door neighbour Sue is also invited to the soiree, but it seems the real party is happening at her house, as daughter Abigail throws her own party. The noise is only getting louder, but teenage Abigail doesn't care, leading to tension back at Beverly's.
With the group struggling to gel, small talk between Beverly and her guests quickly takes a turn. Conversations quickly turn to flirting, but also big rows spring up as jealousy slowly begins to rise.
Other stars also make an appearance in the hit play, delighting audiences across the east of London. Pandora Colin, best known for her roles in The Lady in the Van and Run Fatboy Run, takes on the role of Sue.
Meanwhile, Lauren Patel who stars as Jas in Waterloo Road also joins the cast as Tony's wife Angela. Her character is seen to be clearly more nervous than Tony, clinging onto her glass of water as the party gets underway.
Omar Malik really leans into the 70s-style aesthetic as he wears a typically 70s suit, complete with wide-collard shirt brown suede shoes. His hair is also styled to be permed and curly, slowly taking in the view.
Actor and comedian Kevin also dressed up for the occasion, boating an iconic seventies-style moustache for the play. His grey suit was also typical for the time, sporting flared trousers to make his look stand out.
Critics gushed over the new production of the play, with Tamzin's acting being heavily praised. TimeOut magazine described her portrayal to be "wickedly calculating", deliberately bringing her guests down to make herself "feel better about her rut of a life".
The review carries on: "Tamzin Outhwaite is superb casting as Beverly, the nightmarish hostess of a suburban dinner party on the London side of Essex." They added that the cast's delivery of the lines makes the jokes even funnier, including the growing tension between the actors themselves.
This current version of Abigail's Party is set to run for another month, with the final show due to be played on September 19. Tickets are on sale from 20.
