The most disgusting film of all time shows the lead actor eating real dog poo. Pink Flamingos is a 1972 black comedy crime film that features incest, a severed pig's head, masturbation, cannibalism, castration and foot fetishism.
Divine, a criminal drag queen going by the name Babs Johnson, lives with her mother, son and companion in a trailer decorated with two pink flamingos outside. A tabloid paper brands Divine "the filthiest person alive," which annoys two of her rivals who attempt to steal the crown.
Villains Connie and Raymond Marble are a "jealous, publicity-hungry couple" who try to prove they are filthier than anyone else. They make their money by abducting teenage girls, raping them in their basement and selling the babies to lesbian couples, and they also sell heroin to high school kids.
During one scene, Divine sees a dog releasing its bowels on the side of the road. She kneels down, picks it up and puts it in her mouth as director/narrator John Waters, who called once called himself the "king of sleaze" and the "prince of puke," exclaims: "Not only the filthiest person in the world, but she is also the filthiest actress in the world!"
The drag queen Divine, real name Harris Glenn Milstead, allegedly actually ate dog faeces for the shocking scene. Pink Flamingos was banned in several countries, including the UK, Australia and even in places throughout the United States.
It was submitted to the British Board of Film Classification for an official rating which would allow it to be stocked in shops, however they would only grant Pink Flamingos as 18 certificate if three minutes of footage were cut.
They said: "Firstly, cuts were made to remove the sight of chickens being roughly handled and killed during a bizarre sexual assault on a woman," and went on to explain other scenes which included "a man flexing his anus in close up, making it look as if the anus is 'singing'," filmed to the rhythm of Surfin' Bird.
Turns out that many of the films' grossest scenes had to be removed. Despite this, Pink Flamingos was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically or aestehtically significant."
Director John Waters wrote in one of his memoirs: "To me, bad taste is what entertainment is all about. If someone vomits watching one of my films it's like getting a standing ovation."
He went on to direct the 1990 film Cry-Baby with Johnny Depp and Willem Dafoe.
