On World Password Day (May 7), new research has revealed that celebrity obsession might be doing more harm than good especially when it comes to online security.
A study using data from Have I Been Pwned, which tracks billions of leaked passwords from cyber breaches, has found that UK celebrity names are still among the most commonly used login details floating around in hacked data. In other words, some fans are literally using pop stars as their passwords and hackers are loving it.
The findings from online casino experts casino.org show that pop culture continues to dominate password choices, with familiar famous names regularly appearing in compromised accounts, making them far easier to crack than people think.
When it comes to music, former One Direction members are completely dominating the rankings. Harry Styles comes out on top with a staggering 176,872 appearances in breached passwords, followed by Niall Horan on 111,676 and Zayn Malik with 106,740.
Theyre joined by fellow bandmates Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson, while solo stars including Ed Sheeran, Amy Winehouse, Dua Lipa and Robbie Williams also feature heavily.
But its not just music fans letting the side down.
TV personalities are also splashed across hacked password lists, with comedy-pop duo Jedward topping the television category with 8,503 appearances.
Theyre followed by a string of familiar faces including Katie Price, Danny Dyer, Simon Cowell and chef Gordon Ramsay.
Also making the list are Mary Berry, Joey Essex, Noel Fielding, Ekin-Su Clclolu and Susan Boyle.
Experts say using celebrity names, or anything obvious and personal, is one of the easiest ways to get hacked, as cyber criminals often test them first in password attacks.
So while celebrity culture might dominate our playlists and TV screens, experts are warning it definitely shouldnt be running your security settings too.
