A film icon's family home has caught on fire. Tom Savini, whose career as an actor, director and special effects makeup artist stretches across five decades, is reportedly "devastated" after his family residence was ravaged by fire.

The 79-year-old, who worked on legendary horror pictures including Dawn of the Dead and From Dusk Till Dawn, was raised in the Pittsburgh home which has belonged to his family for generations.

Video captured from outside the property, which is located in the Bloomfield district, shows columns of dark smoke pouring out as firefighters struggled to contain the inferno which took place on Saturday 15 August.

Slasher Radio shared footage of the blaze on X/Twitter and wrote: "Special Effects Legend Tom Savini's home caught fire yesterday. Tom and his wife Jodii are safe.

There was damage to the home and property, but the fire was controlled and put out before all was lost. Thoughts and prayers to the Savini family."

In the footage, two ladders can be seen against the building's front as emergency crews work to put the fire out. Firefighters reportedly managed to douse the flames before complete destruction occurred.

The New York Post reported that Savini has informed a source he is "devastated", reports the Express. The house was formerly owned by his grandfather, who handed it down to his father before it eventually became his.

Portions of the 2015 documentary chronicling his career, Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini, were shot there.

The full scale of the devastation remains unknown and it's uncertain whether any of his personal possessions were lost in the blaze.
