Iconic singer dies after battling sudden blindness as famous pal leads tributes

A beloved singer who recorded with the likes of Harry Connick Jr. and Kirk Franklin has died aged 54 as her church announced the sad news of her death over on Facebook

A beloved singer as died. Gospel vocalist Nikki Ross Bellamy has passed away at the age of 54, soon after the Houston-based vocalist recently stepped back from touring to tackle some health concerns including temporary blindness.

No official cause of death has been released. The artist collaborated with stars including Kirk Franklin, Ricky Dillard, James Fortune, Israel Houghton, PJ Morton, Harry Connick Jr. , Robert Glasper and Kim Burrell.

Her church New Jerusalem Cathedral broke the sad news on Facebook, reports the Express. It read: "Sis. Nikki was more than an extraordinary voice."

"She was a beloved daughter of this ministry whose remarkable gift carried her before audiences around the world while her roots remained deeply connected to her church family. Her voice was unmistakable, her presence unforgettable, and the impact of her music and ministry reached far beyond the walls of the church."

"She was deeply loved by her church, cherished by her Bishop, and embraced by a community that celebrated the tremendous gift God placed within her."

"While countless people came to know Sis. Nikki through her music and public ministry, we had the privilege of knowing and loving the woman behind the voice."

They closed out the post by writing: "The world heard her voice. We knew her heart. Both have left an indelible mark that will not be forgotten."

Tributes flooded in for the gospel legend, most notably from American actor Harry Connick Jr who posted a photograph of them on Instagram and wroe: "My heart is broken. Nikki ross, one of the greatest singers to ever live, has died. She was a hero of mine."

"I had the honor of singing with her on "Love Wins", with @kimburrelllove, @doobiepowell, @prophesyingguitarist, and @jimmygreenemusic... I'll always keep you close, sweet Nikki. God bless your beautiful family. I love you, @nikki.l.ross."

Supporters rushed to the comments section and one wrote: "Absolutely heartbreaking," while another said: "She spoke very highly of you! Thank you for your kindness to our amazing sister. God bless you."

"So sorry for your loss and that of her family, friends, & fans. May her memory be a blessing to you until you meet again."
