Johnny Depp is set to make a swashbuckling Hollywood comeback as his most famous role, Captain Jack Sparrow.

Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise, is keen to get the 63-year-old star back on board for a sixth movie which is tipped to also feature Margot Robbie.

Speaking at Disney's D23, where new projects are unveiled, event Bruckheimer spilled: Were talking with Johnny, were working on a screenplay, and hopefully we can get this done."

Depp has appeared in all five of the previous 'Pirates movies reportedly earning over $300million (220mil) from the series through salaries and profit-participation deals.

If the new deal comes through it would mark a spectacular return for Depp whose work in mainstream movies has slowed down significantly following high-profile legal battles, and his first first Disney role since he won his 2022 defamation case against ex-wife Amber Heard.

He has shifted toward European and independent projects more recently but is also gearing up to play Ebenezer Scrooge in the upcoming festive film, Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol.

Depp first starred as Sparrow in 2003's Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl alongside Orlando Bloom as Will Turner and Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann.

He admitted his character's mannerisms was largely based on those of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards who played Captain Teague, the father of Captain Jack Sparrow, in two Pirates of the Caribbean movies himself.

A sixth 'Pirates has been in the pipeline since 2018 but back then scriptwriter Stuart Beattie hinted that Depp's time as Captain Jack may have been over as they looked to reboot the series.

I think hes had a great run, Beattie told Daily Mail. Obviously, hes made that character his own and its become the character hes most famous for now.

And kids all over the world love him as that character so I think its been great for him, its been great for us, so Im just very, very happy about it. I think Jack Sparrow will be his legacy. Its the only character hes played five times.

Depp has been mainstay of Disney projects over the years including two Alice In Wonderland movies, plus Into The Woods and The Lone Ranger.

However, it's Pirates Of The Caribbean that became his most iconic role and he's helped the franchise make almost 4 billion at the box office so far.

A new movie could be timed to coincide with the 25th anniverary of the original and hit cinemas in 2028.
