Sam Vanderpump from Made In Chelsea is lucky to be alive after he went into sepsis from kidney and liver failure, with a horrifying series of symptoms including his eyes turning yellow.
The reality TV star, who is the nephew of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Vanderpump Rules icon Lisa Vanderpump, has revealed all about the terrifying brush with death. Sam, who is 28 years old and joined Made In Chelsea last year, shared how he has his girlfriend Alice Yaxley to thank for saving his life.
Alice, 23, quickly phoned an ambulance for Sam when she realised he was "delirious" after being bedridden for days complaining of back pain and dehydration. Sam revealed doctors told him if he had waited a mere 24 hours longer to come to hospital, he wouldn't have survived.
His kidneys and liver had failed, leading to severe sepsis. Sam told the Daily Mail that he thought he "was going to die", explaining: "I didn't think my body could cope and that was the scariest thing. It was terrifying."
He developed jaundice, a condition where a symptom of it is the whites of your eyes turn yellow. Sam says his mum managed to stay calm, but that he burst into tears when he was told his kidneys and liver were failing.
The TV star said doctors called his liver function "deranged" and "demonic" and that his other organs also went into overdrive to try and make up for the damage being done. He originally thought it was the flu, and emotionally shared that he was "really, really fighting to keep myself alive".
"I didn't think I was going to survive or see the outside of the hospital again," he confessed. Sam praised his girlfriend, saying the action of calling an ambulance for him saved his life.
Blood tests showed horrifying results, with his white blood cell count through the roof as well as some shocking liver enzyme tests. Sam says doctors said he was "the sickest patient on the ward".
He also had to have a catheter fitted, as he was unable to pass any liquids and developed severe water retention, causing his stomach to swell up enormously. He recalled: "I normally have a six pack, but my stomach had swollen so much it looked like I was pregnant, it was so painful, so uncomfortable."
Sam described the experience as one of the most painful of his life. He said he was born with a kidney and liver disease which had remained dormant, but getting the flu as well as struggling with asthma triggered an infection his body couldn't handle.
He originally loved drinking and partying with his reality TV co-stars, but has said the horrifying hospital experience has changed his outlook on life: "In the past I have used my free time to party and drink and be crazy but now I am going to use my free time very differently. I am currently planning a charity event with Made In Chelsea, which will be featured on the show."
