A mortified Good Morning Britain star has disclosed she was compelled to issue an apology for a wardrobe blunder after encountering her colleague at Buckingham Palace. Laura Tobin, who delivers the weather forecasts on the ITV programme, faced a lighthearted accusation from fellow presenter Charlotte Hawkins, who arrived at the same Garden Party.
Laura "took" an item from Charlotte's GMB wardrobe, but hadn't "technically" asked to do so and then wore it to the royal event. She told The Mail's Richard Eden: "I didn't know she was going to be at the same garden party. She turned up and went, 'That's my dress!'"
The GMB star added: "I said, 'I'm so sorry'. I took it from her wardrobe at Good Morning Britain, but hadn't asked to technically borrow it."
Laura has apparently pulled this previously, too: she once confessed she took a fascinator from fellow GMB star Susanna Reid for another royal occasion, when she visited Royal Ascot.
Garden Parties serve as a means for the Royals to engage with members of the public from "all walks of life", as the official website states. Each year, approximately 30,000 guests receive invitations to Buckingham Palace or the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Scotland.
It follows Laura hitting back at criticism of the programme's weather coverage. In June, as the nation faced weather warnings over extreme heat, she joined Ranvir Singh and Ed Balls in the studio.
At the time, the Met Office issued a stark warning that "population-wide adverse health effects are likely to be experienced, not limited to those most vulnerable to extreme heat, leading to potential serious illness or danger to life".
It also highlighted that "substantial changes in working practices and daily routines will be required".
Much of the show was dedicated to the weather, but it didn't seem to sit well with some viewers. One individual commented: "I bet other countries are laughing at this - those where this heat is quite normal."
Another remarked: "#GMB getting themselves into a right state over the weather. Utterly pathetic. It's gonna be back down to 20 next week. We've become, as a country, an absolute shambles."
Laura, however, defended their coverage, stating: "I understand that a lot of people say, 'you're just being a party pooper, this is just hot weather,' but we are talking about records that we have never reached."
She emphasised that these were temperatures the nation has "never, ever experienced before". Laura also noted that it would be "hard to imagine" what the impact could be due to the unprecedented nature of the heat.
Previously speaking about the heat, Laura said: "I think the thing is, first off, we have our Met Office rare red extreme heat warning. This is only the second time this has been issued."
She went on to say: "They're so rare because we know when we issue them, we mean people will lose their lives, it will cause fatalities and the Met Office issue it with a heavy heart knowing that will be the case, and we say it with a heavy heart."
