Ricky Gervais is facing criticism from his fans after he shared a series of tweets on X/Twitter. On 11 August, his former The Office co-star Lucy announced that she has been diagnosed with incurable, stage four breast cancer that had metastasized to her bones.
Ricky was among the first people to extend his sympathies to the actress as he posted a love heart emoji in response to Lucy's post. Lucy responded to her former co-worker's message with a line of kisses, however it was Ricky's social media posts later that day that sparked fury from his fans.
Gervais took to X/Twitter and asked fans to follow his YouTube channel, which led his unimpressed followers to brand the comedian "out of touch". Just four hours after Lucy's announcement, Ricky tweeted: "I do live broadcasts every Sunday on my YouTube channel. They're mostly s***. Please subscribe anyway."
He also retweeted and posted promotions for his Netflix cartoon Alley Cats, along with fan reviews. One baffled follower tweeted in response: "Bit tone deaf."
"Former co-worker on one of the most successful pieces of work you've been involved in revealed she is terminally ill and you're posting this stuff all evening," reports the Express.
Someone else called him "out of touch" and questioned why he was "posting this s*** after the news about Lucy," as another person said: "I'm assuming you were not aware of Lucy on news when posting."
However, other fans were quick to rush to his defence as they debated that there may be two sides to the story: "Imagine being so stupid that you can't even fathom that he may well have known about this for a while."
"He may have had calls with her, visited her... we don't know do we but you keep on spitting your venom."
Someone else said: "Not everything has to be pasted all over the internet, maybe it's none of your f****** business and something he would rather deal with in private."
