Sam Smith has revealed they're still "gutted" they never became a fishmonger, admitting they find handling fish "very calming".

The 34-year-old singer-songwriter is known around the world for chart-topping hits including Money on My Mind and Stay With Me, but music wasn't the only career they once dreamed about.

Appearing on the Dish podcast, Sam confessed they had always imagined life behind the fish counter instead of on stage. They said: "Im still gutted Im not a fishmonger. Honestly, I used to go to Waitrose a lot as a kid and the fish section, I just loved. I like to handle fish. It felt very calming."

While Sam has gone on to become one of Britain's biggest music stars, they admitted there is another thing they desperately miss now they live in New York proper British fish and chips.

The singer confessed it's one of the "disasters" of living across the Atlantic, claiming nothing compares to the real thing back home. They explained: "It's actually one of the disasters of my life right now.

"Its like I actually get sad sometimes. Apparently, its something to do with the potato, I got told, and the water in New York and you cant get it the same."

However, Sam insisted not just any fish and chips will do. They said: "But I have a thing with fish and chips, right? So, I love fish and chips from fish and chip shops where like the chips like stick together.

"And youve got like the silver hot plate when you walk in. But I feel like the gastropub fish and chips ... I call them posh fish and chips, I dont see that as fish and chips."

Even trips back to the UK don't always satisfy the singer's craving, with Sam admitting they struggle to find what they class as "proper" fish and chips in London.

They added: "And even in London, I find it hard to find proper fish and chips. Like my family from Whitley Bay, my favourite fish and chip shop is called Marshalls there, which is amazing. When people talk about fish and chips, theyre not talking about the same fish and chips I am."

It's not the first time Sam has spoken about their love of all things seafood. Back in 2023, the singer revealed they'd happily swap the recording studio for a quieter life by the water.

Appearing on The One Show, Sam joked they would like to become a "fisher-them" a gender-neutral play on the word fisherman that reflects their non-binary identity. They said: "I'd just like to end my days fishing."
