A soap star has leapt to Sydney Sweeney's defence, insisting Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney receives backlash simply because she's "blessed with boobs and blonde hair".
Former EastEnders star turned adult star Joshua Pascoe, who played Ben Mitchell on the BBC soap between 2010 and 2012, says he's been hooked on the latest season of Euphoria and believes much of the backlash aimed at the actress is completely undeserved.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, Joshua admitted Sydney's storyline is one of the main reasons he's still tuning in. He said: "I'm watching Euphoria, that's really good. Sydney Sweeney has been getting pelters and, I must admit, not because of the way she looks, but I'm only really watching it for her storyline. Probably because it's an [adult site] storyline actually."
The 28-year-old actress has faced criticism online over the show's increasingly explicit scenes, but Joshua believes she's simply doing her job. "I can understand why people are obsessed," he said. "I think she's great in it. I think she plays her character so well. This season has been her best season."
While he admits he doesn't think the latest series quite matches the earlier ones overall, Joshua says Sydney has been one of its standout performers. "As a whole it's probably not as good as the first two, but..." he explained.
He also has his own theory about why the actress attracts so much criticism.
Joshua added: "I think I know why she gets slack. It's because she's a young girl and she's been blessed with blonde hair and boobs. I think people like throwing shade at people."
Joshua, who left EastEnders in 2012 before later swapping acting for work in construction and launching a successful online subscription platform, says talent should matter more than appearances.
"I don't know what she's like as a person, I've never met her, but at the end of the day she can act and she's doing her job well," he said. "That's the thing they probably slate her, but they'll still watch the film she's in."
He also suggested the criticism may be linked to Euphoria's provocative storylines.
He shared: "The only thing I would say is this season of Euphoria is really raunchy like, really raunchy as hell. Maybe people like throwing shade at her because of that, but not being funny, if you listen to Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, she's nothing compared to those."
