Antiques Roadshow US turned emotional as one guest burst into tears over the valuation of a vintage beer stein.

The guest turned up with an old beer mug that used to belong to his grandmother, explaining to expert Noel Barrett: She had it over the kitchen sink on a shelf, and shed always put her string in there. Shed go to the bakery and get a cake or something that was always wrapped in paper, and that was the jar she stuck the string in for future use.

Noel said the stein was a wonderful thing before pointing out the original makers label from New York City. The stein dated from around 1880, and was made to be on display behind a bar to advertise Gambrinus Lager.

He went on to explain: It has a reverse on-glass applied label. This is a curved piece of glass painted on reverse and then applied to the mug most commonly you would find liquor bottles with a beautiful label on it, but its very rare to see a beer stein advertising beer with this reverse on-glass.

The appraiser then noticed a paper sticker on the mug which had the number 50 written on, as the guest explained: I was going to have a garage sale and I put prices on a couple of things I had, but I never had the garage sale. Barrett laughed: I wish I had been at the garage sale!

Ill tell you do you know what this is worth? Between $2,000 and $4,000. The guest couldnt help but burst into tears, clearly very emotional as he replied: Oh, come on! Two to four thousand?

You could certainly bring two to four thousand and who knows, maybe a little more, Barrett told him, branding the item a real treasure. The guest murmured: I cant believe it, thank you! as he struggled to speak through his tears.

The episode was originally filmed in San Francisco back in 1997, and by 2012 the stein was estimated at anywhere between $6,000 and $8,000. In 2021, a further update priced it at $4,000 to $6,000.

He wouldnt be the first guest to get emotional over a valuation, as back in 1999 two sisters couldnt stop crying over the value of their mums old Tiffany lamp. Originally purchased for $125, the lamp dated back to 1905 and was crafted in the Rose Helmet style with an arch and leaf base.

Expert Arlie Sulka said: I have to say that the base is really unusual. I can count on one hand how many times I've seen this base, it's so unusual. This is a situation where the base is almost as great as the shade. Eventually the lamp was valued at an eye-watering $80,000 to $120,000 and by 2021 it was worth $250,000 to $350,000.

Arlie said: I was living on adrenaline on this one. I was really excited and doing somersaults and cartwheels inside. I wasnt too nervous about delivering the news because it was good news. Today the retail value of [the lamp] would be $250,000 to $350,000.
