Formula One aces are gearing up for the start of the British Grand Prix weekend - but some of the sports top drivers have had love lives just as racy as anything on the track.

Down the years motor racing has had more than its fair share of playboys and lotharios, famous for revving up the romance

Here, James Moore looks back at some high-octane tales of the cockpit heroes

BEDDED 5,000 WOMEN!

Britains James Hunt had the motto: Sex, breakfast of champions sewn into his racing overalls. It was fitting as the dashing blonde driver boasted of bedding 5,000 women.

He once slept with 35 air stewardesses at the Tokyo Hilton ahead of the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix, where he would go on to scoop the world title.

Hunts son Freddie says: He was a good-looking guy and really loving life back then. Nicknamed Hunt the Shunt, his first wife Suzy left him for the actor Richard Burton.

He married - and divorced - again, before tragically dying aged 45 from a heart attack in 1993, the day after hed proposed to new girlfriend Helen. Chris Hemsworth played Hunt in the 2013 film Rush.

Described as the greatest driver never to win the World Championship, Sir Stirling Moss won 16 Grand Prixes and notched up plenty of romantic conquests along the way. In a home filled with James Bond style gadgets he had a cabinet where he stored black notebooks to keep track of what he called his crumpet.

In fact, he once admitted that while racing he could keep, One eye on the track, another on the gauges and still... spot a pretty girl in the crowd. Moss was married three times, wedding first wife Kate in 1957 after seeing her across the Le Mans track. He died in 2020 aged 90.

He was nicknamed El Chueco, meaning the bandy legged one, but Argentine racing legend Juan Manuel Fangio had no problem running off with a string of lovers. Winning five F1 titles in the 1950s, the short, balding speed merchant was an unlikely sex symbol who, its rumoured, even dated famous first lady Eva Peron.

And amid winning trophies and once being kidnapped in Cuba, he found plenty of time for nookie. Despite dying in 1995 aged 84, having never married or officially fathered any children.

His body was exhumed in 2015 in a paternity case involving two men with different mothers claiming to be his son. DNA tests showed they both were!

Biographer Gerald Donaldson says: He was extremely popular with the ladies.

Fast Eddie Irvine, now 56, was the sports ultimate Nineties playboy, once boasting: Sex is too easy. Its an easy way to have fun, isnt it?

The Northern Irish driver, who was runner-up in the 1999 drivers championship, also admitted that hed lost count of the number of women hed slept with.

Over the years Irvine was linked with models Rachel Hunter and Kelly Brook as well as actress Pamela Anderson. He had a daughter with former girlfriend model Maria Drummond. In 2014 Irvine was given a suspended sentence following a bar brawl in Italy over a woman.

This spring former F1 champ Jenson Button married Playboy model Brittny Ward in Florida and the pair have two children. But he admits that in his racing days he was a highly committed and industrious playboy who once partied wearing only a pair of Ugg boots.

He won the title in 2009, by which time hed called off his nuptials to Fame Academy singer Louise Griffiths. Later tying the knot with model Jessica Michibata, their marriage only lasted a year.

Jenson, now 42, says: Its almost impossible to hold down a relationship and be a Formula One driver.

Finlands Kimi Rikknen, who won the 2007 world title once wore a helmet in tribute to his F1 hero James Hunt. And his boozy antics and alleged cavorting in London lap dancing club in 2005 earned him a similar playboy tag.

Despite being dubbed the Iceman, the dad-of-twos love life is far from frigid. He married and divorced Miss Scandinavia Jenni Dahlman before wedding fitness and underwear model Minna-Mari Minttu Virtanen in 2016.

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was famously in an on/off relationship with Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger until 2015. The star once told Playboy magazine: The best thing is probably good sex in a good car. When it comes to good sex nothing comes close.

Lewis, 37, is reported to have dated model Danielle Lloyd as a teen and has admitted enjoying the single, dating life since splitting from Nicole. He has been romantically linked to the likes of singer Rita Ora and models Kendall Jenner and Camila Kendra.
