Arsenal forward Kai Havertz was left with egg on his face after celebrating a goal against his former side Chelsea, only for VAR to chalk it off.
In the 32nd minute of the Gunners clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Havertz thought he had given Arsenal the lead against his former side. The German forward raced through on goal following a quick free-kick from Declan Rice to score after his shot beat Robert Sanchez in the Chelsea net.
Immediately, eyes were turned on Havertz to see whether he would celebrate against the side he won the Champions League for back in 2021 against Manchester City.
And instead of simply just holding his hands up in the air against the Blues, Havertz instead opted to put his finger to his lips, shushing the Chelsea supporters who were incensed by the Arsenal star's celebration.
However, Havertz was immediately left to rue his choice of celebration when VAR intervened to check if he was onside when Rice played him through. And unfortunately for the German, who left Stamford Bridge in 2023 to join the Gunners, he was.
The 25-year-old was offside, leading to Chelsea supporters resoundingly cheering the decision to chalk off Arsenal's goal. And it was a source of frustration for the Gunners who should have gone 1-0 up through Gabriel Martinelli moments before Havertz's goal was ruled out.
The Brazilian was through one on one with Sanchez only for the Spaniard to make a good save with his left hand to prevent the Gunners from scoring. And with the goal chalked off, and with Sanchez saving Martinelli's effort, the game between the two rivals remained 0-0 at half-time.
