Sir Dave Brailsford has officially been removed from his role at Manchester United in a major INEOS shake-up.

The former Team Sky Cycling boss was part of the hierarchy at Old Trafford following Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS' investment in the club and takeover of the footballing operations in December 2023. Brailsford was heavily involved in setting up the new leadership team behind the scenes at Old Trafford, including the decision to hire Omar Berrada as chief executive.

However, club filings have revealed that Brailsford is no longer listed as a club director. This comes after reports last summer that he would move back to his Director of Sport role for INEOS.

Brailsford took on the mammoth role at United despite having no background in football. The 62-year-old spent a year in charge of football operations at United after INEOS took control of the club from the Glazer family.

He oversaw a tumultuous time at Old Trafford that saw United finish 15th in the Premier League and lose the Europa League final last season after employing the disastrous Ruben Amorim.

United are now run by Berrada, who INEOS poached from Manchester City to become chief executive, and Jason Wilcox as technical director.

The Red Devils have seen an upturn in fortunes as Michael Carrick's 10 wins from 14 games in interim charges have seen United confirm Champions League football next season with three games to go.

Brailsford was previously team principal of INEOS Grenadiers and revolutionised Team GB's cycling program as Performance Director from 1997 to 2014. His implementation of focusing on marginal gains led to dominant performances at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics.

However, his time at United will be known for the brutal cost-cutting measures that Ratcliffe put in place after pouring money into the club. Hundreds of employees were made redundant while expenditure was slashed across many areas of the business.

Despite the backlash, Ratcliffe openly backed the cost-cutting, insisting they were necessary in order to return United to the top of world football. "Manchester United has become mediocre," he told the United We Stand fanzine.

"It is supposed to be one of the best football clubs in the world. We have to make some difficult and unpopular decisions. If you shy away from the difficult decisions, then nothing much is going to change.
