A footballer has been left fighting for his life in intensive care after he nearly drowned in a swimming pool.

Yael Trepy, who plays for Serie A side Cagliari, was airlifted to hospital when he was discovered at a mansion in Sardinia during his day off. The striker, 20, had been enjoying some downtime after Cagliari's win over Arezzo in the Copa Italia on Friday (August 14).

In a statement, Cagliari shared: Yael Trepy is currently hospitalised at the Santissima Annunziata Civil Hospital in Sassari, where he is in intensive care. The Club is in constant contact with the healthcare facility and the players family and is closely monitoring the progress of his condition.

At this time, Cagliari Calcios thoughts are with Yael and his family. The Club also requests the utmost respect for their privacy and will provide any updates when available.

Italian outlet La Repubblica claim that Trepy is not a strong swimmer and was in the deep end of the pool, with LUnione Sarda adding that the youngster lost consciousness before being taken to hospital.

Born in France, Trepy came through the ranks at US Creteil-Lusitanos, on the outskirts of Paris. He was snapped up by the Serie A side in 2022, where he earned his debut last season - rescuing a 2-2 draw against Cremonese with a goal in the 88th minute.

The Rossoblu's season started on Friday, where Trepy played 53 minutes before he was subbed off in their 1-0 win.

Cagliari get their league campaign underway at Parma on Saturday.

The Italian side then have back-to-back home fixtures as they welcome Inter in the league and Hellas Verona in the Coppa Italia.
