Premier League clash stopped as irate Granit Xhaka clashes with fans

West Ham and Sunderland's clash was stopped on Saturday lunchtime as an irate Granit Xhaka clashed with fans while sitting on the subs bench

Granit Xhaka was at the heart of it

West Ham and Sunderland's clash was stopped on Saturday lunchtime as an irate Granit Xhaka clashed with fans at the London Stadium. Saturday lunchtime's kick-off was briefly paused after an incident between supporters and players on the bench.

The Hammers were leading the game 3-1 in the closing stages, when Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka appeared to become embroiled in a row with a fan sat behind him.

More players and officials then became involved, before the referee was forced to pause proceedings for a short period. The game eventually resumed with the home side securing a vital victory in their battle against Premier League relegation.

The game was briefly stopped as a result of the argument

"Heated exchange between Granit Xhaka and a few West Ham fans behind the bench," one fan said on social media, sharing a video of the incident.

"Xhaka asking the fan to come down to the pitch this is hilarious," a second joked. While a third posted: "Granit Xhaka having a meltdown with one of the fans in the stands!"

And another added: "Nothing says rattled like Granit Xhaka getting into verbal confrontations with West Ham fans!"

Sunderland have been experiencing quite the return tot he big time, but they were handed a brutal reality check at the London Stadium.

The Hammers, who are battling the drop, blew Sunderland away with an incredible first half performance. Speaking after the full-time whistle, TNT Sports' commentator Ally McCoist said: "West Ham thoroughly deserved the victory, especially in the first half.

"A massive, massive win."

Curtis Davies, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, added: "Massive win. I thought this second half performance was based on the fact they had the 3-0 lead, maybe took the back seat which allowed Sunderland to come into the game.

"Jarrod Bowen in the first half particularly was very effective. Crysencio Summerville had a really good performance in and out of possession, helped his team throughout.

"And Matheus Fernandes in midfield ran things. He scored one worldie and nearly scored another. Really good performance from West Ham and one to take forward."
