Sheffield United have dismissed manager Ruben Selles following just five matches of the new Championship campaign. The Blades suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat at Ipswich on Friday evening, leaving them anchored at the foot of the table without a single point.

Selles, aged 42, had only taken over from Chris Wilder on June 18 and penned a three-year contract. Reports suggest Wilder is poised to make a comeback as Selles' successor in the Bramall Lane hot seat.

Wilder had departed after guiding the club to the Championship play-off final, where they came agonisingly close to securing an instant Premier League return.

Under Selles' stewardship, form has plummeted dramatically, with his team managing just one league goal this season whilst also suffering Carabao Cup elimination to Birmingham.

The club released a statement, which read: "Sheffield United Football Club's board of directors have opted to make a change at managerial level.

"After a disappointing start to the EFL Championship campaign, Ruben Selles has been relieved of his duties as manager.

"Following a review of recent performances, and taking into account the feelings of supporters, the timing of the change has been made to give the club the best possible opportunity to improve the current league position.

"The board of directors wish to thank Mr Selles for his hard work. A new manager will be named in due course."

Wilder raised eyebrows in during his first stint in charge with a rant about "do-gooders and lefties" after he was asked about pressure on his shoulders following a string of poor performances.

He said: People talk about not being allowed to say this or that to them. Im not bothered in psychologists or do-gooders or lefties, I don't know what you're allowed to say.

Im the football manager, so Im saying it as it is."

He is currently odds-on favourite with all major bookies to return to the dugout before the club's game against Charlote at home on Saturday, with a win having the potential to move them off the bottom of the Championship table.
