Florian Wirtz bags legendary Liverpool shirt number after 'don't believe everything' rage

Florian Wirtz was involved in a furious social media outburst earlier this summer after reports suggested he was desperate to wear the No 10 shirt at Liverpool

Florian Wirtz will don Liverpool's legendary No 7 shirt as his preferred No 10 is already occupied at the Premier League champions.

The attacking midfielder joined the Reds earlier this summer from Bayer Leverkusen in a British transfer record-breaking 116m deal. Before arriving at Anfield, speculation surrounded which squad number the golden boy of German football would take on Merseyside.

Rumours suggested Wirtz wanted the No 10, but it belonged to Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. Wirtz refuted these claims on social media, stating on Instagram: "Who says I want the 10. I respect players. Don't believe everything what's written."

Though the German international won't wear the same number he had at Leverkusen, the 22-year-old secured another iconic number upon the reveal of Liverpool's new Adidas home kit.

He will wear the No 7 this season, which became vacant after Luis Diaz moved to Bayern Munich for 65m, reports the Mirror.

Notably, Wirtz greatly influenced Diaz's Bundesliga switch. At his Bayern unveiling, Diaz revealed: "I know what kind of football is played here."

"Florian told me that the Bundesliga has a high intensity, comparable to the Premier League. The stadiums are always full. Florian wished me a lot of luck."

Wirtz joins a prestigious list of Liverpool legends who have donned the number seven shirt, including Kevin Keegan, Kenny Dalglish, Steve McManaman and Luis Suarez.

Reds' supporters have taken to social media to express their delight at Wirtz being handed the iconic number. One fan enthused: "Wirtz 7 just looks right," while another chimed in: "Wirtz 7 just looks so good."

One final fan added: "Wirtz given the iconic number 7 to take us to glory and win our seventh UCL."

Wirtz will undoubtedly be aiming for a strong start with his new squad number. After a friendly against Spanish outfit Athletic Bilbao on Monday, he'll have the opportunity to bag his first piece of silverware in the Community Shield face-off with Crystal Palace next weekend.

Liverpool then kick off their Premier League campaign against Bournemouth on Friday, August 15.
