After Harry Maguire announced he has been replaced as Manchester United captain, Daily Star Sport has ranked all of the Red Devils 11 captains of the Premier League era from worst to best

    Harry Maguire has been replaced as United skipper

    Harry Maguire announced that he has been replaced as Manchester United captain on Sunday.

    The 80million defender was handed the armband by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer upon his arrival from Leicester City in 2020 but after a lack of game time under Erik ten Hag and persistent transfer links, the England international will be replaced.

    Maguire became Uniteds 11th captain of the Premier League era but also the club's fourth in as many years as the transitional period at Old Trafford rumbled on under Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer.

    But Ten Hag will further push his United revamp by replacing Maguire, and while no replacement has been named yet, Bruno Fernandes took the armband throughout the season with Maguire stuck on the bench.

    In light of the end of another United skipper, Daily Star Sport ranks all 11 of Uniteds official captains of the Premier League era based on their time with the armband.

    1. 11. Ashley Young (2019-2020)

      The decision to name Ashley Young as captain at the age of 34 sums up the state of the club when he took the armband. Dropped to full-back after losing his legs on the wing, Young was skipper for just five months before he joined Inter Milan in January 2020.

    2. 10. Michael Carrick (2017-2018)

      In no slight to Carrick as a player, one of the most underrated yet popular players at Old Trafford ranks 10th on the list after he only played five games as Uniteds official captain after undergoing treatment for an irregular heart rhythm. He retired at the end of the season.

    3. 9. Antonio Valencia (2018-2019)

      Another United cult hero who took the armband too late and another nod to Uniteds leadership struggles. Valencia became the clubs captain in 2018 years after his days as a flying winger ended. The Ecuadorian played just nine games as captain due to injury. He joined LDU Quito in his homeland at the end of the season.

    4. 8. Harry Maguire (2020-2023)

      The fact that Maguire is this high on the list shows the mess of the club that he attempted to lead in 2020. Maguire finally lifted a trophy the EFL Cup in 2023 but hes been hammered by critics throughout, with good reason at times. United may see a different Maguire now the pressure of captaincy has been lifted, that is if he doesnt leave Old Trafford this summer.

    5. 7. Wayne Rooney (2014-2017)

      Seeing Wayne Rooney this high on a United list is surprising, despite breaking the clubs all-time goalscoring record as captain, Rooney is another case of being handed the armband too late. Although United won the FA Cup with him playing every minute of the final, he was benched for the EFL Cup and Europa League finals in 2017.
