Ian Wright paid a classy tribute to rapper DMX when dissecting how Leeds United beat Manchester City on Saturday.

Rapper DMX died at the age of 50 this week after suffering a heart attack with Wright paying tribute on Match of the Day.

DMX was responsible for classics such as Party Up (Up in Here) and X Gon' Give It To Ya as well as Ruff Ryders Anthem.

That last tune opens with the lyrics: Something new Stop, drop, shut 'em down, open up shop.

And Wright found it a perfect way to answer when Gary Lineker asked how Leeds beat the champions-elect.

Wright responded: They stopped them, dropped them, opened up the shop on them, to be honest.

And it earned the former England and Arsenal striker plaudits from fans watching, with Wright cementing his status as one of footballs most loved pundits.

One fan wrote: Ian Wright tonight paraphrasing lyrics from DMX - Ruff Ryders Anthem on Match Of The Day is another reason why he should be cherished as the national treasure that he is. What's even better is Gary Lineker got the reference. What times we live in.

And a third commented: What a footballing tribute Mr Wright. Nuff Respect.

With one more saying: Protect Ian Wright at all costs.

Leeds had shocked Manchester City with Stuart Dallas netting twice for the ten-men, including a late winner.
