American football supporters are claiming the sport for their own after their national side frustrated England at the World Cup and Lionel Messi nears an MLS switch.
Having insisted that the beautiful game should now be called soccer permanently after their impressive showing against the Three Lions, the update over Messi's future has sent fans into overdrive.
The seven-time Ballon d'Or winner will reportedly join David Beckham's Inter Miami when his PSG deal comes to an end in the summer, with Twitter user pointing out that he has never played in the Premier League.

One fan said: "England really thought Soccer was there sport, but have they ever had the GOAT Messi play in there (sic) country?"
A second agreed: "America is best at every sport in the world lol."
A third posted: "Finally playing for a REAL league, And will finally play REAL competition."

A fourth then concluded: "Its officially called Soccer."
The 35-year-old, who is currently in the running for the World Cup Golden Boot thanks to his two goals for Argentina, will reportedly become the highest paid player in MLS history.
He once said during his time with Barcelona: "I would like to play in the United States and experience life and the league there, but ultimately come back to Barcelona in some capacity."
Elsewhere, the United States have drawn both their opening games in Qatar and know a win will see them through to the knockout stages.
They followed up their 1-1 draw with Wales with the stalemate against England, with boss Gregg Berhalter feeling positive.
He said: "Any time you can get a shutout in a World Cup it's a good thing."
