Man Utd to benefit from Viktor Gyokeres news as 70m star lined up for swap deal

Arsenal finally landed Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon, beating Manchester United to his signature, but the Swede's departure could help Ruben Amorim's attempts to sign another one of his former stars

Manchester United's pursuit of Morten Hjulmand might have been given a boost by Viktor Gyokeres' switch to Arsenal.

The Red Devils showed keen interest in the Swedish forward, who played under Ruben Amorim at Sporting Lisbon before his move to the Gunners.

United are also eyeing another Sporting star, midfielder Hjulmand, who is reportedly on Juventus' radar as well, according to reports from Italy. However, instead of an outright buy, the Turin side are considering offering Douglas Luiz in a swap deal, with an extra fee on top, as per Gazzetta dello Sport.

But this plan could be complicated by Luiz's hefty salary, rumoured to be around 4.3million a year, which far exceeds Sporting's current pay scale. Portuguese outlet O Jogo suggests that this could make any potential swap deal nearly impossible to pull off, although Juve might still give it a shot.

After parting ways with Gyokeres, Sporting bosses would be reluctant to let go of another key player. And having secured a deal potentially worth up to 64m for Gyokeres, Sporting aren't under any pressure to sell and could hold out for Hjulmand's 70million release clause if they choose to.

This could prevent United's rivals, who are better placed than the Reds, from swooping in and signing the midfielder right under their noses.

After spending 133.5m this summer with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko topping their wish list it remains to be seen whether United will succeed in securing Hjulmand's signature this summer, particularly since Amorim's priority remains on signing a top-class striker.

Given that Juventus seem to be struggling to stump up the cash for a deal, and with Gyokeres' transfer boosting Sporting's finances, United are in a position to play the waiting game and possibly revisit the transfer in a future window.

United are eager to offload several stars who are heading for the exit to help bankroll Amorim's much-needed squad revamp. However, the Portuguese has warned that players won't be flogged on the cheap and still have a future at Old Trafford.

Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia were all left behind from the US tour and United are happy to see them leave.

Amorim said: "I know for a fact that these people, Omar and Jason, and the club have a number (price) for these players. If they don't reach that, they will be Manchester United players, no doubt about that.

"I understand clubs are maybe waiting for the last minute, but they can have a surprise and I'm ready. I'm ready to receive the players."
