Premier League club owner 'slaps Prime Minister's nephew' in fight caught on CCTV

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was seen with a torn shirt following an altercation in the stands at a basketball match.

The 58-year-old billionaire businessman was present at the Euroleague Basketball final between Olympiacos - who he also owns - and Real Madrid on Sunday night. Marinakis has been at the helm of the Greek club since 2010.

And despite Olympiacos triumphing over their Spanish rivals 92-85, the club's owner was reportedly involved in a confrontation in the stands. CCTV footage appears to show him walking down the VIP steps before confronting and allegedly slapping the nephew of Greece's Prime Minister, Grigoris Dimitriadis.

Marinakis' apparent slap sparked a furious brawl, with further clips circulating on social media showing Marinakis with a ripped shirt, shouting at someone while being kept apart by a barrier and security staff.

Local reports said the bust-up stemmed from a bitter dispute between rival political and sporting factions during the high-profile match. It dates back to 2022, when Greece was rocked by the 'Watergate' scandal.

A surveillance software called 'Predator' was used to target 87 individuals, amongst them government ministers, military chiefs and journalists. Dmitriadis stepped down from his role as general secretary of the PM's office in the aftermath, although no reason was given for his resignation and a govenment official stated it wasn't related to Watergate.

Fast forward to February of this year, and four people were jailed as part of the surveillance controversy. No government officials, including Dmitriadis, have been charged in court.

Marinakis owns several prominent media outlets in his native Greece, and they have been central to investigative journalism into the fiasco.

On the basketball court, Olympiacos clinched their fourth Euroleague title. The team had previously defeated Fernbahce in the semi-finals to secure their place in the final.

During Marinakis' tenure, Olympiacos' football team has celebrated 11 league titles. The club also tasted European glory by lifting the Europa Conference League trophy in 2024.

He made his entrance into English football by acquiring Nottingham Forest in 2017. He steered the club to Premier League promotion via the play-offs in 2022.

After securing their top-flight status, Forest delivered an outstanding season to qualify for European football in 2025. Vitor Pereira's squad made it to the Europa League semi-finals before being defeated by the eventual champions, Aston Villa.

A challenging Premier League season saw Forest cycle through four permanent managers as they fought against the drop.

Pereira took over from Sean Dyche in February and managed to stave off relegation.

Forest wrapped up the season with a 1-1 draw against Bournemouth at the City Ground on Sunday. The club ended up 16th in the table, a safe five points clear of the relegation zone.
