Dortmund star throws shade at Premier League after Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City exits

Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich both progressed in their respective European campaigns at the expense of English clubs, while Borussia Dortmund also reached the Champions League semi-finals

Borussia Dortmund veteran Mats Hummels took a cheeky jibe at the Premier League after its dreadful week in Europe.

Premier League title chasers Manchester City and Arsenal were both dumped out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, respectively. Bayern defeated the Gunners 1-0 at the Allianz Arena, having largely been touted as underdogs by the English media when the draw was made.

There was more English suffering at the hands of German clubs as Bayer Leverkusens 1-1 Europa League draw at West Ham saw them progress to the competitions semi-final with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

And Hummels was at the centre of Dortmunds own magnificent comeback win against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday. The World Cup-winning centre-back provided a sumptuous assist and netted an own-goal as BVB lost a two goal cushion before coming back to spectacularly win 4-2 (5-4 aggregate).

Hummels has clearly caught wind of English arrogance when it comes to Premier League sides level and the perceived low standard of German football. The Bundesliga has regularly been labelled a farmers league in the past due to Bayerns decade-long dominance.

The derogatory term seeks to undermine the quality of a league and it's players, other times used to describe France's Ligue 1 which produces some of Europe's brightest talents.

The English media regularly underplay German teams capabilities by expecting Premier League teams to waltz past them. And that was something the 35-year-old took personally as he aimed a thinly-veiled dig on social media.

In a show of solidarity with the other Bundesliga clubs, Hummels jokingly tweeted: Good harvesting this week my fellow farmers, along with a handshake emoji and a German flag.

The only Premier League side left in Europe is Aston Villa, having beaten Lille on penalties in the Europa Conference League.
